Top Torrent Site announces Voluntary Shutdown: BTjunkie’s End

Most of know BTjunkie as being one of the largest torrent file-sharing sites. Sunday night, the site suddenly shut down voluntarily. Although BTjunkie never had any legal action taken against it, after the “witch-hunt” initiated against sites like The Pirate Bay or MegaUpload, its owners probably didn’t want to go through the same set of harassments their “sister-sites” went through. This is a very smart move since it was rated amongst the top five torrent sites in most polls over the Internet, so chances are it might have been next on the FBI’s list.
The short message posted by the owner of BTjunkie begins: “This is the end of the line my friends.” Then, it goes on to explain that: “The decision does not come easy, but we’ve decided to voluntarily shut down. We’ve been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it’s time to move on. It’s been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best”. This is the message you’ll encounter should you try to access the site now.

It leaked out that the decision taken by BTjunkie’s founderbecause of the recent high-profile legal action against popular sharing sites such as The Pirate Bay and MegaUpload; he told TorrentFreak that all these, “played an important role” in taking this huge step. And before people start complaining about them not being dedicated to what they were fighting for, let’s just recall that the owners of MegaUpload face up to 20 years in prisons and fines of $6.7 million after being arrested last month. These are the biggest charges of copyright infringement in the history of the U.S.; the U.S. government estimated the fraud somewhere around $500 million of illegal downloads of music, films and other content.
Next to this, the charges which the founders of The Pirate Bay are facing seem like kindergarten games since they were ordered to serve up to one year of jail and pay fines of round $5 million by a Swedish court back in 2010. But, unlike MegaUpload, where the case had been built up by FBI agents, who seized the domain and shut down the site, The Pirate Bay site is up and running; the only change is that in order to prevent U.S. officials to seize and close their site, the owners moved it from the .org domain to the .se one. Also, the owners took an extra security measure by now serving magnet links in order to make the downloading of the files all the more difficult to trace down to individuals.
